Hockey fan banned for mascot attack

HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Police said a man attending a Connecticut Whalers game was banned from the team's arena for allegedly attacking the team's mascot, "Pucky the Whale."

Hartford police said Kevin O'Connell, 28, has been banned from future events at XL Stadium after he allegedly tackled and punched the mascot, The Hartford Courant reported Tuesday.

O'Connell, who police said was intoxicated at the time, was charged with one count of second-degree breach of peace. Investigators said he assaulted the mascot after making a bet with friends.

"While there was substantial potential that the individual inside the 'Pucky the Whale' costume and/or fans could have been injured during the incident, no one was seriously injured," police said.
