NEW YORK, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The New York Jets were granted special permission to fly close to the Empire State Building, which was lit in the team's colors, after their weekend victory.

Newark Airport air-traffic controllers granted permission for the Boeing 747 carrying the team to fly close to the building to see the lights Sunday night after the team's victory over the New England Patriots, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

"For the Empire State Building to be lit green and white was already special," team General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "Then for everyone involved to allow us to have a view on our way back was a great ending for our trip and something that the team will always remember."

The Federal Aviation Administration said the side trip took the plane into La Guardia Airport's airspace, but no other flights were affected.
