BOSTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A Boston cab driver said a woman he did not realize was pregnant gave birth in his vehicle on the way to the hospital.

Calixte Beauliere, 54, said he picked up a couple headed for Massachusetts General Hospital about 8 p.m. Friday and he did not notice the woman was pregnant until she started screaming, the Boston Herald reported Wednesday.

"All of a sudden I heard a noise back there," the cab driver said. "She was screaming. She was really in pain, yelling and stuff. I said, 'What's going on?' And then the husband said, 'My wife is having a baby. Hurry up! Hurry up!'"

Beauliere said he heard the baby cry only 2 minutes later, while he was still struggling through a traffic jam to reach the hospital.

"The baby just came out so quick," he said.

The driver said he pulled over to the side of the road, where an ambulance met them to take the family the rest of the way to the hospital.

Beauliere said he did not have the chance to congratulate the couple, but they did leave him a $20 tip on the $11 fare.
