Two arrested for manhole cover thefts

VALRICO, Fla., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Authorities in Florida said they have arrested two men accused of stealing manhole covers to sell as scrap metal.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said deputies responding to an 11 p.m. Monday call about a suspicious vehicle discovered a Chevrolet Avalanche being driven by Kenneth Pierce, 20, with Michael Rowe, 25, in the bed of the vehicle with a pry bar and the manhole covers, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Wednesday.

Deputies said Rowe admitted to stealing the covers from the Bloomingdale West subdivision in Valrico and told them he had planned to sell them as scrap metal.

Both men were charged with grand theft and Rowe was also charged with dealing in stolen property, the sheriff's office said.

The manhole covers were put back into place by deputies.
