NEW LENOX, Ill., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- An Illinois man who has created 17 guitars from cigar boxes said he is also making a mandolin from the boxes and is now aiming to create a dulcimer.

New Lenox grandfather Chuck Meyer said he only played guitar "for about 10 minutes" when he was a teenager but his interest in the instrument was reignited when he saw a video on the Internet about cigar box guitars last year, the Chicago SouthtownStar reported Tuesday.

"My jaw dropped. The sound was so clean and simple. I thought, 'Wow! I want to do that. Wow! I want to make one,'" he said.

Meyer said he has made 17 guitars in the past year and is completing work on an 8-string mandolin. He said he is next planning to make a dulcimer.

Meyer said he gives most of his creations to family and friends, but some of them can be purchased from Down Home Guitars in downtown Frankfort.

"It will never be a money-making venture," he said. "I'm really happy just building them."
