NEW YORK, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- U.N. officials said two areas of the organization's New York headquarters were evacuated due to a stink believed to have come from a sewer line.

U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said diplomats were evacuated from the Security Council and General Assembly as a "precautionary measure" due to a "suspicious odor," the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Police said the odor is believed to have come from a burst sewer pipe in the facility's basement.

Among those evacuated were children from several countries brought to the U.N. Security Council to address world leaders during a ceremonial session.
