TIGARD, Ore., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- An Oregon couple said their baby was born in the passenger seat of their moving car while en route to the hospital.

Erik Scharffenberg, 40, of Tigard, said he was driving his wife, Jennifer, 31, to the hospital at about 5 a.m. Wednesday as she was feeling intense labor pains less than a minute apart, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.

"I told her to just keep breathing, but don't push yet," the father said.

However, Scharffenberg said the next thing he knew he was hearing the cries of newborn Sadie while he was still driving on Southwest Pacific Highway.

"I look over, and she's got a baby on her chest," he said.

The Scharffenbergs pulled over, called 911, and an ambulance arrived to take mother and baby the rest of the way to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, where Sadie weighed in at 6 pounds, 10 ounces.
