MESQUITE, Texas, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Administrators at a Texas high school said about a dozen girls were turned away from a homecoming dance for failure to comply with the dress code.

Ian Halperin, a spokesman for the Mesquite Independent School District, said the girls were banned from Saturday's Mesquite High School dance because their dresses were deemed by teachers to be too revealing, The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday.

Parents and students at the school reported as many as 50 girls were turned away from the event.

"The students had been told all week long during the announcements there would be a dress code," Halperin said. "The whole point of this is it should have not been a surprise to any young lady that her dress would be reviewed before entering the dance."

Halperin said potential refunds for students who were turned away would be handled on a case-by-case basis.
