NEW YORK, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor George Clooney has the best looking facial hair but Tom Selleck is best at managing his facial hair, a survey found.

The survey by WAHL -- facial hair expert and inventor of the first beard trimmer -- says Selleck, best known for his role in the 1980s TV show "Magnum, P.I.," is more popular with those age 35 and older than with those age 18-34.

While Selleck is best known for sporting a mustache, George Clooney has sported the goatee, short boxed beard and stubble look.

"The Styling Guide to Shaving Face," says stubble -- a favorite of the red carpet Hollywood set -- adds an air of bad boy rebellion, but it is harder than it looks to achieve.

It requires near-daily maintenance to achieve that "I-just-woke-up" look but stubble helps slim the lower half of the face and highlight cheekbones, the guide says. To attain stubble:

-- Avoid the razor for one to two days.

-- Create a lower border by trimming along the line where the chin meets the neck and remove all hair below it.

-- Use an electric trimmer with guard and trim whiskers to a uniform length.

-- Along the edges of the beard, choose a guard that is one step shorter than before.

The survey was conducted by Kelton Research April 30 to May 5, using an e-mail invitation and an online survey, with quotas to achieve an accurate representation. The survey has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
