NEW YORK, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- New York police say they are suspicious of the story given them by a man who turned over a 2-foot alligator at a station house.

Police said a man turned over the reptile Sunday at the 88th Precinct station house in Brooklyn and claimed to have found the gator in a city park, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

However, officers said they suspect the man who claimed to have discovered the gator actually had kept the reptile as a pet and turned it over when it became too large. It is illegal to keep an alligator as a pet in New York.
