NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A review of New York's licensed dogs found more dogs have been dubbed "Bella" than any other name in the Buffalo-Niagara region during recent years.

The Buffalo (N.Y.) News said its review of the 533,438 dogs licensed outside of New York City in the state found the sharp increase in Bellas coincides with the popularity of the "Twilight" novels and films, which feature a Bella as their main character.

The News said 240 dogs born in the state in 2003 were named Bella, compared to 633 in 2006, the year after the first "Twilight" book was published.

The Bella increase was especially pronounced in Erie and Niagara counties, where a total 61 licensed dogs were given the name in 2002 and the number jumped to 121 in 2008, when the first "Twilight" movie hit theaters.
