BOSTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Police in Boston said they do not know what happened to a kidnapped dog that turned up about 24 hours later.

Investigators said witnesses reported seeing a man and a teenager on bikes remove Ruthie the toy poodle from the car of her owners, Judy and Freddie Marks, while they were dining Saturday night at a Boston restaurant, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

"You wouldn't believe how I felt, so responsible, so negligent. I was crying, hysterical, I would pay anything to get Ruthie back," said Judy Marks, 70.

Marks said she and Freddie Marks, 79, put out missing dog fliers promising a $2,000 reward for Ruthie's safe return, and they received a phone call Sunday saying a man in a wheelchair was waiting for them with Ruthie at Moakley Park.

Judy Marks said they found Ruthie with a group of homeless men and she gave them $500 and a promise to return with the rest of the money the following day.

"I didn't care if I had to give the money to the thieves themselves," she said. "All I wanted was Ruthie."

Police said they do not know if the men who returned the dog to the couple were connected to the thieves. The investigation is ongoing.
