Officials with the Eriksbergs Gamla Kyrka church in Herrljunga said custodians had been planning to repaint the pews after complaints from parishioners but the plans were halted when a curator examined the brown stains and determined they were from a paint job in the 1930s, making them part of the 12th century church's cultural heritage, The Local reported Wednesday. Advertisement Church leaders said there had been several attempts to wash the paint off the pews during the past 80 years, but none were successful. "That the bats would have managed to dot every pew would have been pretty incredible," church clerk Lilli-Ann Grindsio said.
