VIERA, Fla., May 27 (UPI) -- A Florida woman said a pest control company has trapped 19 raccoons on her property, but it has not deterred the animals from returning.

Lil Hobson of Viera said she and her husband, Bill, have been struggling with the raccoon raiders for more than five months, with damage including ripped-up roof shingles, torn soffits and peeled stucco, Florida Today reported Thursday.

The couple said a Suntree-based company has captured 19 raccoons on their property since mid-December, but the parade of nighttime foragers has yet to slow.

The pair said they are further perplexed by the fact that their neighbors have not logged any complaints about raccoon problems.

Susan Carroll-Douglas, a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist, said she was unsure of what would cause the raccoons to target the home.

"I don't know of a sure-fire way to determine that sort of a scenario. One thing I will say about raccoons: Once they find a place that they deem home or part of their territory, they are very hard to deter," she said.

"They will teach their young. They will teach their friends, their relatives and their neighbors. ... They're pretty notorious for getting on roofs, in soffits, in attics, because they're looking for whatever shelter they can find," Carroll-Douglas said.
