Wrong number calls stem from county typo

NEW ALBANY, Ind., May 18 (UPI) -- An Indiana woman said a typo in a letter sent by the county treasurer is causing her phone to ring constantly with people trying to reach officials.

Carolyn Baxley, 72, said delinquent tax notices from the Floyd County Treasurer's Office, which inform residents of the June 1 deadline for paying late property tax bills, lists her home phone number instead of the treasurer's question line, the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Tuesday.

Baxley said she and her husband try to field every call so they can make sure people have the correct phone number, which is one digit away from Baxley's.

"I really didn't mind taking the calls because, when I realized what it was, I felt like they were important," she said.

Treasurer Linda Berger said the typo was made by Indianapolis company SRI, which was charged with sending out the letters.

"I may have to take part of this blame," she said. "I'm sure I saw this letter before it went out and maybe I just didn't notice that number. I thought I changed the number ... but maybe I didn't tell (SRI) to do it."
