MIGORI, Kenya, April 23 (UPI) -- An Anglican clergyman in Kenya said members of his congregation who don't have voting cards will no longer be offered holy communion.

Canon Walter Okeyo of the Migori Parish told a voter registration workshop organized by the Civil Society Organization that members of his church will have to obtain voter identification cards before they can receive communion, The Nation reported Friday.

"It will be a condition in my church that you first show me your voter's card before receiving holy communion," he told the meeting.

The workshop was aimed at discussing methods of boosting voter registration in Nyanza Province. It was attended by leaders from religious, political, women's and youth organizations.

"We need concerted efforts to realize high voter turnout in the referendum and the 2012 general election. People's attitude must be changed through any workable method including denial of conjugal rights," said Oloo Odari of the Orange Democratic Movement.
