CHICAGO, April 16 (UPI) -- Officials with the Taste of Chicago said five suburban restaurants are being excluded due to rules allowing only city eateries to participate.

Chicago Special Events Director Megan McDonald said Taste of Chicago vendors were informed of the rules change in 2007 and restaurants were told only eateries with locations inside the Chicago city limits for at least one year prior to the 2010 event would be eligible, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday.

McDonald said five suburban restaurants failed to comply with the new requirements and will not be allowed at the June 25-July 24 event.

"I felt very strongly that we needed to get back to the true sense of what Taste of Chicago is. It's meant to promote Chicago restaurants," McDonald said. "There are many phenomenal restaurants in the suburbs. But, there are hundreds and hundreds of restaurants in Chicago -- thousands even -- that should be given a fair opportunity to participate. We're not anti-suburb. We're just trying to make sure we're following the rules that govern this event."

The excluded restaurants were Aunt Diana's Old Fashioned Fudge, Riverside; Buona Beef, Berwyn; Celebration Creamery, Niles; Sweet Baby Ray's, Elk Grove Village and Wood Dale; and Mazzone's Italian Ice, Western Springs.
