COPENHAGEN, Denmark, March 26 (UPI) -- A Danish TV reporter who demonstrated the toxicity of a shampoo by pouring it into a fish tank was acquitted of animal cruelty Friday.
An appeals court in Copenhagen reversed the verdict of a lower court on Lisbeth Koelster, NewsCore reported. The district court in Gilstrup outside Copenhagen found Koelster guilty last year but did not impose any punishment because of the amount of time that had passed since the 2004 broadcast.
A veterinarian filed a criminal complaint after watching the broadcast. Koelster, hosting a consumer affairs show on the public channel DRI, poured "very diluted" anti-dandruff shampoo into a fish tank and reported that within three days 11 of 12 guppies in the tank were dead.
"This is a great victory for the freedom of journalistic work," Koelster said. "I was not an executioner of these fish and I have not violated animal protection laws, as this ruling confirms."
