LANSING, Mich., March 17 (UPI) -- Meat producers and hunters in Michigan are slamming Gov. Jennifer Granholm's proclamation declaring Saturday "Michigan Meatout Day."

The Michigan Farm Bureau said Granholm's official proclamation declaring a day of meatless eating is "unconscionable and insensitive to livestock and dairy farmers," the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.

"It's inconceivable to us that the governor could stoop to this level of telling people what they should and shouldn't eat based on the philosophies of 'food elitists,'" said Wayne Wood, president of the farm bureau.

The proclamation, which followed lobbying from vegetarian groups, highlighted the health benefits of a vegetarian diet and encouraged "the residents of this state to choose not to eat meat" on Saturday.
