TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said a 73-year-old man managed to rob three banks before he was arrested on a tip resulting from surveillance video.
Tampa police said James Bruce, 73, who walks with a slow shuffle, robbed a Bank of America Jan. 15, a SunTrust bank Feb. 1 and a second Bank of America Feb. 10, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Friday.
Each time, police said the unarmed Bruce handed a teller a note asking for $600.
Bruce was arrested Thursday after he was recognized from surveillance video released to the public Wednesday night. He was charged with three counts of bank robbery and jailed in lieu of $22,500 bond.
Police said Bruce told them he needed the money for his mortgage because his retirement had run out. He told investigators he had planned to pay the money back to the banks once his financial situation improved.
