Man has third kidney transplant

NEW DELHI, May 21 (UPI) -- The third time around may be lucky for Jaswant of Jalandhar, India, who recently underwent another kidney transplant surgery after the first two failed.

Counting his own two, the 33-year-old photographer has had five kidneys thus far.

Jaswant (last name not provided) had his third transplant surgery 40 days ago and is determined to "make it this time," the Times of India reported from Jalandhar in northern Punjab state.

"He is fourth such patient in the country to successfully undergo three renal transplants," doctors who performed the surgery told the newspaper.

Finding kidney donors within the family has not been a problem for Jaswant.

It was his older sister who donated the organ for his first transplant in 2004. The donated organ held for about a year before his body rejected it as Jaswant couldn't afford the post-surgery treatment, the report said.

The second time it was his younger sister, but that donation too didn't take after two years, forcing Jaswant back on dialysis.

The third time it was his 55-year-old mother who came forward to save her son.

"Determined to see me live, the family just wouldn't give up and prepared for another surgery," Jaswant said.

Doctors, moved by the family's determination, performed the surgery free of cost and have decided to help Jaswant with other resources, the report said.

Shriver starting garden at Calif. Capitol

SACRAMENTO, May 21 (UPI) -- U.S. first lady Michelle Obama gave the White House a vegetable garden and now California first lady Maria Shriver is doing the same for her state's Capitol.

Shriver, who has promoted the creation of gardens at schools across the state, will plant the first edible garden on the Capitol grounds in Sacramento Thursday, her office said in a news release.

Since Shriver has taken up the cause of using edible gardens as a learning experience for children, the number of gardens at California schools has doubled from 3,000 to 6,000.

"WE Garden in Capitol Park" will help inform Californians about how gardens teach not only students but people of all ages about nutrition, healthy living, agriculture, science, history and service, Shriver's office said.

Report: Olympic torch resembles a joint

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 20 (UPI) -- The ceremonial torch for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, resembles a hand-rolled marijuana joint, observers say.

Unofficially designated British Columbia's largest cash crop, marijuana is popular in Canada's westernmost province, and the Toronto Star's bureau there said there's a lot of nudging and winking about the torch's similarity to a "spliff."

"I'm sure the organizers didn't intend for it to look like a joint, but that's what a lot of people are seeing," said Jodie Emery, editor of Cannabis Culture magazine.

The 3-foot-long Olympic torch will be carried by 12,000 people in relays across 28,000 miles before the Games. It was designed to resemble the lines left behind by skiers and skaters on snow and ice, and is built out of stainless steel, aluminum and sheet molding, the report said.

Suzanne Reeves, the Vancouver organizing committee's director of communications for the Olympic torch relay, dismissed the claims of the resemblance.

"It's quite magical. Most people's reactions are emotional," she said.

Man proposes by naming horse race

SOUTHWELL, England, May 20 (UPI) -- A British man said paying more than $6,000 to have a horse race named for his marriage proposal created "the best result of the day."

Andy Simpson, 34, said he paid $6,270 to have a race at the Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England, course named "Will You Marry Me Jodie Baker?" while his intended was in attendance, The Sun reported Wednesday.

"It worked like a dream," Simpson said. "Her face was a picture when she heard the name of the race. I thought it would be the ideal place to propose as she loves horses. We never backed a winner, but having Jodie say 'yes' was the best result of the day."

Baker, 30, who has been dating Simpson for six years, said she was stunned by the proposal -- but in a good way.

"There was no hesitation in saying yes, once the shock had worn off," she said. "I am well impressed with him. He's not normally that romantic!"
