EVERETT, Wash., March 19 (UPI) -- A woman who admitted stealing almost $75,000 from the Washington state church where she worked told police Satan was her partner in crime, prosecutors said.
The 62-year-old woman was charged Wednesday with the theft from the Arlington Free Methodist Church, The Everett (Wash.) Herald reported. She first came to the attention of police in June when she called a detective and admitted stealing from the church.
The woman told police that she "guessed that Satan had a big part in the theft," Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Kathy Jo Blake said in charging documents.
Investigators say that the woman forged the pastor's signature on 80 checks totaling $73,575.18 between 2005 and February 2008. She was dismissed after the finance chairman noticed bookkeeping irregularities.
The woman told police that she used the money for living expenses, stealing because she feared losing her home.
