LONDON, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- British high-end retailer Marks & Spencer has announced it will begin carrying faux-diamond engagement rings for just $26 each.

Rekha Kannan said the rings, which are encrusted in diamante and feature a fake jewel, are the perfect choice for the beau on a budget, The Daily Mirror reported Friday.

"They look really beautiful but you don't have to break the bank for them. You wouldn't know they are not real diamonds," she said.

However, Cathy Howes, an expert with magazine You & Your Wedding, said some women might not be receptive to such an inexpensive proposal.

"We all know there's a credit crunch on but I'm not sure many of our brides would swoon with excitement," she told The Daily Mirror. "There is a middle ground and most brides would want the two most romantic and emotionally significant rings in their lives to cost more than a DVD."
