While the seven-layer cake was meant to serve 3,000 people, 6,000 showed up for Saturday's festivities at the Capitol in Salem, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Sunday. Advertisement "You sure serve a crummy cake," 70-year-old Salem resident Merwyn Richert joked to cake servers at the event. "I just wanted to have a taste," Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council member Theonie Gilmore, who managed to grab a morsel, told The Oregonian. "It was good." In addition to free cake and ice cream, those who showed up got a helping of oratory from Gov. Ted Kulongoski and other state leaders. "More than anything else," Kulongoski told event attendees Saturday, "today is about you." Oregon officially became the 33rd U.S. state Feb.14, 1859.
