SANTA ROSA, Calif., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A Santa Rosa, Calif., couple said their beloved pet cat, George, has finally returned home after he went missing more than 13 years ago.

Melinda Merman and Frank Walburg said the gray cat went missing in July 1995 but their searches for the feline came up empty until last week, when a mobile home park manager trapped a sickly old cat and turned him over to the county animal shelter, the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported Wednesday.

The shelter used a microchip implanted in the cat to track him to the Northtown Animal Hospital, which in turn notified Merman and Walburg that George had been found.

The couple said George weighed more than 14 pounds when he went missing but he is now down to 6 pounds. They said they are unsure if he will survive, but for now he is back at home and eating well.
