BALLWIN, Mo., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A Missouri family says the toughest part about the wrong body being brought to their father's wake was getting the funeral home staff to believe them.

The survivors of Frederick "Fritz" Schnable told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the staff at Schrader Funeral Home in Ballwin tried adding more makeup to the body in an attempt to convince them the deceased was, indeed, Schnable.

"They tried to convince us that they can just fix it," said one of Schnabel's two daughters, Jeani Ward. "I said, 'No, the body is not Dad.'"

"We thought we were in the wrong room, but he had Fritz's clothes on," added son-in-law Chuck Schreiber.

The newspaper reported Sunday it eventually came down to unbuttoning the shirt on the corpse to check for a surgical scar that wasn't there.

It turned out the body of the 80-year-old Schnable had been switched with that of Robert Leonard, 87, and had been buried by Leonard's family three days earlier.

One of Leonard's relatives told the Post-Dispatch she, too, didn't think the body at his viewing looked right, but didn't mention it because she had not seen him for several years.
