Tommy W. Mayes says that when he lost his school ring in 1973 while serving at a U.S. Air Force base near Mineral Well, Texas, he was devastated, the San Antonio Express-News said Wednesday. The ring, which also had a wedding ring diamond that had belonged to Mayes' mother, was lost for nearly 35 years until math teacher Peggy Harvey happened upon it while walking in the area that used to be a training ground. After noticing a first name and insignia on the ring, Harvey decided to contact the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Mayes said the group put the two in contact and soon they met so he could retrieve the ring. For Mayes, the first-time meeting with Harvey was simply "remarkable." "There are two things remarkable about this story," he told the newspaper. "One, that somebody actually found the ring, and two, they took the time to find me." Advertisement
