Dead cicadas make quiet jewelry

SANDWICH, Mass., July 9 (UPI) -- Two Massachusetts teenagers are making extra summer cash by turning dead cicadas into jewelry they sell at a local market.

The noisy bugs swarmed this summer and then died out, leaving plenty of raw material that Katheryn Maloney and Brady Cullinan have turned into colorful earrings and necklaces that are sold at a local farmer's market for about $10.

The Cape Cod (Mass.) Times said the pieces are lacquered and dyed in bright colors and decorated with beads.

And there is a ripple effect on the Cape economy. The Times said the 17-year-old artisans paid neighborhood friends a nickel for every cicada they brought in.
