MUNCIE, Ind., June 25 (UPI) -- A 7-year-old Indiana boy who wanted to go to the mall drove there in his grandmother's Geo Tracker, although he crashed the vehicle several times.

Matthew Sands, who spotted the boy near the Muncie Mall, said that his head barely topped the dashboard.

"He looked awfully small to be driving," Sands told the Muncie Star-Press.

Carvin Mafatau, another driver, said that he tried to stop the Geo when the boy drove into a bush near a Burger King and tried to get the keys when he hit a bush and tree near Outback Steakhouse. Sands finally grabbed the keys when the boy backed into his car.

Police Lt. Steve Cox said he expected to see a teenage driver when he arrived.

Sgt. Linda Cook said that the officers questioned the boy's grandmother but made no arrest. She said they talked to the grandmother about safeguarding her car keys.

The grandmother said her grandson apparently learned how to drive from a PlayStation game. She said she had put him to bed for a nap and only realized something was wrong when police called.
