Before last Saturday's launch of the space shuttle Discovery, which delivered Chamitoff to the International Space Station for a six-month tour, the 46-year-old Montreal native asked his aunt for the bagels her shop creates, The Gazette newspaper in Montreal reported. Advertisement "His favorite is the garlic bagel, but I didn't dare send garlic bagels -- they would have stunk up the whole place," said Mona Shlafman. She said she instead sent him 24 sesame bagels before last weekend's launch. Chamitoff's family moved to Southern California from the Montreal area when he was 11, but Shlafman said he routinely asked for "care packages" of the bagels. She said the bagels are boiled and then baked in a wood-fired oven and have a charred, glossy appearance, the report said. Shlafman told the newspaper her nephew told her NASA grants each astronaut a "wish list" of foods to take aboard, and said she was "just thrilled" to play a part in the mission.
