NEW YORK, April 14 (UPI) -- An Israeli antiquities dealer claims in a lawsuit that a New York rabbi stole an ancient marble slab engraved with the Ten Commandments.

The dealer, Robert Deutsch, claims Rabbi Shaul Shimon Deutsch -- no relation to the plaintiff -- stole the fifth-century piece for the Living Torah Museum in New York's Borough Park, the New York Post reported Monday.

Rabbi Deutsch said he originally agreed to pay $110,000, but stopped payments after the dealer told him he would have to return the item to the Israeli Antiquities Authority in five years -- a condition he says the dealer forgot to mention until after the agreement was made.

The rabbi said he stopped payments after giving $27,500 to Deutsch and told the dealer he wanted to call off the deal.
