GARY, Ind., March 24 (UPI) -- A man who said he was scared of thugs and needed a ride, hijacked the squad car of a Gary, Ind., police officer who agreed to help him, police said.

Danny Ware, 39, of Winkelman, Ariz., allegedly asked Cpl. Jeffery Patrick to give him a lift to the Adam Benjamin Metro Center before hijacking Patrick's squad car and hitting the road, the Gary (Ind.) Post-Tribune reported.

No one reportedly was injured in the Friday incident and Ware was arrested after police got him to stop in LaPorte County. Officers used stop sticks, which would puncture the vehicle's tires if driven over, to get Ware to surrender.

Ware received treatment for non-life threatening injuries and is faced with charges of auto theft, fleeing, resisting law enforcement, driving with a suspended license and criminal mischief, the Post-Tribune reported.
