NEW YORK, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A federal judge in New York made a special trip to a hospital to hold a naturalization ceremony for a woman who was hit by a cab on the way to his courtroom.
Shanttarag Raghunanan, an immigrant from Guyana, became a U.S. citizen Wednesday, the New York Daily News reported. U.S. District Judge Roslynn Mauskopf administered the oath of citizenship in her room at Bellevue Hospital.
Raghunanan's hip was broken in the collision, which occurred on her trip to the federal courthouse in Brooklyn. She was unconscious for three days.
Lisa Raghunanan, the new citizen's daughter, said that her mother did not remember being hit by the cab when she regained consciousness but was worried about getting to the courthouse.
"She said, 'I have to go to the ceremony,' then, 'Are they still going to do it?'" her daughter said.
