LONDON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Investigators say a British man sentenced to 5 years for counterfeiting manufactured 14 million phony one-pound coins.

Marcus Glindon admitted when he was arrested that he had been making the fakes for seven years, sometimes as many as 12,000 a day, The Daily Record of Glasgow reported. He had a workshop near his home in North London and received 2,000 pounds ($4,000) a week from two men he said remained anonymous.

Detective Constable Dan Roberts said Glindon, who was sentenced Friday, seemed relieved when police captured him. Roberts said Glindon, a skilled engineer, was recruited to make the fake coins after he was laid off from a job.

"He is quite a simple man, who was married and has two children," Roberts said. "He was quite happy just to have a job. He was getting paid a wage and doing what he likes doing."

Investigators believe Glindon's workshop was only part of the operation, the newspaper said.
