SALTFORD, England, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A British couple was reunited with their pet dog after they paid a $1,500 ransom to dognappers in exchange for the canine's return.
David Cornock, 66, said the dog, Buddy, was taken by four men Sept. 26 while Cornock was picking up his newspaper, The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.
Cornock and his wife, Mareth, 63, talked the dog thieves down to $1,500 from a demand of more than $1,800 for ransom.
"It was a dark and rainy night and we met him by a roundabout," Mareth Cornock told the newspaper. "I was frightened. But Buddy recognized me straight away. I just burst into tears of relief. We had to be brave but we knew this was the only way to get him back."
Police have criticized the couple for submitting to the ransom demands, the Daily Telegraph report said. The police said it made their work "difficult."
