Art student creates Post-it mosaic

WENATCHEE, Wash., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A Washington state art student spent three months creating a 10-foot portrait of Ray Charles entirely composed of Post-it notes.

David Alvarez of Leavenworth, Wash., said he was inspired to create the mosaic by working on a photo of Charles in an Adobe Photoshop class at Wenatchee Valley College.

"It's something so simple,” Alvarez told CNN. “You can still see the flaps sticking out on some of them. Naturally the Post-it Note just sort of flaps out."

He found that Post-it art is high maintenance. When he displayed the mosaic on July 28 at a Wenatchee art show, he spent 14 hours keeping an eye on it and replacing notes that fell off.

After that, he decided that adding extra glue to the notes is legitimate.

Alvarez, who plans to be an art teacher, is debating whether to make another Post-it work, using 4-inch-square notes instead of the 3-inch ones that went into Ray Charles.

"Part of me wants to, part of me doesn't," he said.
