EDINBURGH, Scotland, July 14 (UPI) -- Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has found that sleeping in the ministerial residence is aggravating his asthma.

Bute House is an 18th century townhouse in Edinburgh, an example of classic Georgian architecture.

Experts are split on what could be causing the problem, The Scotsman reports. Some suggest the house may be too damp, while others say it is too dry -- and yet others say the period furnishings may conceal dust mites.

Salmond, who heads Scotland's first nationalist government, sleeps at Bute House about three nights a week. He spends the rest of his time at home near Peterhead, more than 100 miles northeast of Edinburgh.

"In some ways, Bute House is less than ideal," a source close to Salmond told the newspaper. "It's causing Alex problems. He can't sleep properly, because the damp seems to be affecting his asthma. It disturbs his sleep, and he can't really go anywhere else. When Bute House is there, you can't really go into a hotel like he did during the campaign. It just wouldn't be the right thing to do."
