KINGSTOWN, N.C., July 5 (UPI) -- A 5-year-old boy from Kingstown, N.C., saved six other children from a rabid fox by pinning the wild animal down for more than a minute.

"I wanted to protect my little brother," said Rayshun McDowell, who was bit on the leg while protecting the other children, the Charlotte (N.C.). Observer reported Thursday.

The 61-pound boy managed to pin the animal for more than a minute before his stepfather, Ryan Thompson, was able to help him.

"I had to hit it in the head with a stick I found in the yard to finally kill it," Thompson told the newspaper.

Rabies is a fatal virus that attacks the nervous system of mammals, said Cleveland County health official Sam Lockridge.

"I definitely wouldn't advise anyone else to react the way the young boy did, because of the dangers," Lockridge said to the Observer. "But that shows a lot of heart and it's a good thing he reacted that way and helped those other children."
