ANTIOCH, Calif., June 17 (UPI) -- A mother who ordered apple juice for her toddler at a San Francisco-area Applebee's was horrified to discover he had been served a margarita in a sippy cup.

Kim Mayorga told the Contra Costa Times she began wondering what was in the cup when her son started making faces and pushing it away, since apple juice is his favorite drink. Then she lifted the lid and was hit by the smell of alcohol.

"When I called the waitress over, I couldn't believe what I was saying: 'You served my son alcohol,'" she said.

Mayorga said her son got sick Monday night after the incident at an Applebee's restaurant in Antioch. She took him to the hospital and he appears to have made a complete recovery.

Randy Tei, a corporate vice president for the chain, said pre-mixed margaritas and apple juice are kept in bottles of similar size and shape. While the bottles have different labels, a hurried employee grabbed the wrong one.

"We absolutely believe it was an honest mistake," Tei said. "And those workers have learned a very important lesson by it."
