WASHINGTON, April 11 (UPI) -- The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression has announced 16 U.S. recipients of its 2007 Jefferson Muzzle awards.

The Muzzle awards call attention to what the center says are "egregious or ridiculous affronts to free expression." The awards have been bestowed for 16 years each April in honor of the birthday of the center's namesake.

Taking the top prize is the Bush Administration for "political interference in communicating government-funded scientific research to the public."

Robert M. O'Neil, director of the center, said in a news release that the winners come from every level of government and the private sector. Coming in at second place is the National Collegiate Athletic Association, for its prohibition of the use of Native American names and imagery in college athletics.

Other 2007 winners are the Maine Bureau of Liquor and the Ohio General Assembly. All the winners are listed at the center's Web site at http://www.tjcenter.org/.

Past winners include former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and former president Bill Clinton.
