PLANO, Texas, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A Texas man with a love for exotic animals lost his pet monkey, a crocodile, a tarantula and a tank of piranhas when police raided his home.

Another alligator is missing. Bobby Crawford Jr. of Plano told the Dallas Morning News the critter escaped from his back yard last year.

Crawford was most upset at the loss of Darwin, his 8-year-old rhesus macaque. He had constructed a large indoor-outdoor cage for the monkey and had the animal's name and an image of a rhesus macaque tattooed on his body.

Police learned of his illegal pets during an investigation into a minor traffic accident. Investigators who visited Crawford's home first spotted Darwin and then the piranhas.

Crawford says he did not realize that keeping the animals was illegal. He said he is willing to leave his job and move to a place where he can keep Darwin.
