STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Swedes get the chance to watch their prime minister pardoning a pig for Christmas.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt chose the name Smulan or Crumb for the month-old piglet who will never be converted into a Christmas ham, The Local reported. The Berga Agricultural College, where Smulan was born, has pledged that he will live out his natural life span.

But Reinfeldt complained to the newspaper Aftonbladet that he has found the pardon is seen by some Swedes as an unhealthy attempt to imitate the U.S. president, who, in recent years, has pardoned a turkey before Thanksgiving. He said that TV 4 proposed the pig pardon.

"They asked me to do it and I thought it sounded kind-of fun," he said.

In a pre-recorded statement, Reinfeldt pardoned Smulan and wished him a long and happy life.
