Baby bald eagle does Manhattan

NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Residents of a New York City apartment building in Manhattan believe a bird sitting atop a sixth floor air conditioner Tuesday was a baby bald eagle.

April Jackson said she saw the bird "outside her window" of the building at 126th and Broadway, The New York Post reported Wednesday.

She tried to get it inside.

At 4 p.m., Jackson called police who also tried to help get the bird to a safe place. That night a loud noise scared the creature who then flew to a tree.

Experts say bald eagles don't usually come to Manhattan.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Web site says bald eagles arrive in December and the Hudson River area is one of the best places to view the majestic birds. The greater black-backed gull is often mistaken for the American bald eagle.
