'Prosperity Theology' is booming

NEW YORK, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- An approach to Christianity that emphasizes material prosperity is booming in the United States, Time magazine reported.

Christians are generally familiar with the Biblical admonition: "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" Time said growing numbers of Christians are restating the question as: "Why not gain the whole world plus my soul?"

The approach has variously been known as Word of Faith, Health and Wealth, Name It and Claim It and Prosperity Theology, Time said. It suggests that a loving God does not want his followers to be poor.

A Time poll found that 17 percent of Christians surveyed said they considered themselves to be part of such a movement -- and 61 percent said they believe God wants people to be prosperous.

Of the four biggest megachurches in the country, three -- Joel Osteen's Lakewood in Houston; T.D. Jakes' Potter's House in Dallas; and Creflo Dollar's World Changers in Atlanta -- preach some form of Prosperity Theology, Time said.
