NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The head of New York City schools is threatening to spend millions of dollars to create jobs for 44 assistant principals no one seems to want.

The 44 are without placements because none of the 1,450 public school principals replied to Chancellor Joel Klein when he sent word around about the availability of the assistants, the New York Post reports.

"If you are a principal interested in hiring one of these (assistant principals), please contact me immediately," Klein wrote.

After receiving no replies, he warned in his weekly memo he would have to spend millions of dollars creating unnecessary jobs for the 44 because he wouldn't allow them to bump less senior workers.

The Department of Education says there are currently 24 assistant principal vacancies but none of Klein's 44 candidates fits the qualifications.
