KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 16 (UPI) -- Two teens on a Vespa attempted to steal another Vespa from a 17-year-old in Kansas City, Mo., but were thwarted when the engine would not start.
The youths pushed the victim off his scooter at a stop light and one got on. He did not realize the battery needed a kick-start, finally giving up and taking off with the ignition keys, the Kansas City Star reported.
The victim, who is the son of a high-ranking city official, called 911 on his cell phone, but police took a half hour to respond, the newspaper said.
The thieves still have the keys, so the victim and his father's names are not being published.
This is the second time the official's family has been victimized. Their home was invaded at night in 1994. By the time police arrived, the thieves had left with a handbag and a television, the newspaper said.
