TUCSON, May 10 (UPI) -- Onetime U.S. Navy Top Gun and air show veteran Dale "Snort" Snodgrass forgot to put his landing gear down at a Tucson air show practice, a report said.

Snodgrass, 57, underwent Federal Aviation Administration counseling for the March 4 mishap at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in which the Korean War-era F-86 Sabre he was piloting skidded to a stop and caught fire, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

The retired captain and Florida resident, who holds the U.S. Navy record for hours in an F-14 Tomcat, was unhurt in the accident.

Despite the lapse, the U.S. Air Combat Command still has "total confidence in his abilities" and Snodgrass remains on the Air Force show schedule, officials said.

However, retired Air Force Maj. Jack Boileau told the Daily Star he had difficulty understanding how a veteran could forget such a basic rule and noted the F-86 has lights and alarms to prevent such a mistake.

The FAA report did not mention the warning systems and described the accident as "pilot induced."
