LES ARCS, France, April 14 (UPI) -- A British man who lost his sight after a street crime set a downhill ski record for blind people, hitting 100.94 mph in Les Arcs, France.

Kevin Alderton, 34, was guided down the slope by radio speakers inside his helmet.

"It shows disability is no barrier to achievement," he said.

Known as Kevin "Cannonball" Alderton, he was an avid skier until eight years ago when he went to the aid of a woman being attacked by a London gang. The attackers gouged his eyes, and he was left with 4 percent vision, the BBC reported.

A military veteran, Alderton took up skiing again with the help of St. Dunstan's, a charity that provides support to blind ex-servicemen and women who want to regain their independence.

Alderton has been selected for the Great Britain Adaptive Ski Team Development Squad and hopes to compete in the 2008 World Championships and the 2010 Paralympics in Canada.
