WASHINGTON, July 27 (UPI) -- U.S. military medals have surfaced for sale on eBay, prompting federal legislation to make it against the law to claim ownership of an unearned medal.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, Navy Crosses and U.S. Army Distinguished Service Crosses were found on eBay.

Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo., introduced the "Stolen Valor Act of 2005" in the U.S. House.

The act would close a loophole in current law that allows people who possess or claim a medal to avoid prosecution if they don't wear it.

If passed, anyone who claims to have earned a medal he did not earn would face fines and prison.
