LOS ANGELES, July 4 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles-area man is challenging the California Department of Motor Vehicles over the way the U.S. flag is depicted on motorcycle license plates.

When Damian Weilbacher received his plates last month, along with two flag stickers to be affixed to the plates, he noticed the flag was displayed with the blue field with 50 stars in the upper right-hand corner.

"It's not proper flag etiquette," Weilbacher told the Santa Clarita Valley Signal.

The paper reported the U.S. Flag Code calls for the flag to be displayed so the blue field is in the upper left-hand corner -- regardless of whether the flag is hung vertically or horizontally.

Weilbacher told the paper he called the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Sacramento and spoke to three different people about the flag sticker -- and that the last person he spoke with asked him, "So what?"

He said an unidentified employee in the office of Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told him the matter was a federal issue.
